Our schools closed on March 13, 2020. Between September 10, 2020 (when they reopened) and March 13, 2022 our children spent a minimum of 103,320 minutes wearing masks in school.
I have made one mark for each minute. Look at all those minutes. Not once did the kids complain.
I don’t know what their generation will be called. I don’t know what their story will be. But let it be said of our children that they stayed strong, they held the line, they did what was asked of them (they did what was necessary), while adults everywhere lost their minds.
My children are rockstars. They are my heroes. This is my way of honoring the contribution they have made to our society. They are doing their part. May the same be said of us.

Tally marks illustrating all the days of the year. The bolder marks indicate the new normal we now live under, beginning with the closing of schools on March 14th. This work is ongoing.

Being home with them all day, every day, and not being able to be with other people, began to feel similar to when they were toddlers and did nothing but ask questions constantly. I was just as exhausted mentally as I was back then. So I recorded, to the best of my ability, the bombardment of queries. I’m sure I missed a few, being so used to tuning them out!

Inspired by the act of writing lines in school to allow a lesson to sink in and a reminder to myself that we will get used to this time.

Calling back to “practice takes practice” made at the start of quarantine, this piece was created for the day when my children returned to school, after six months at home.

Interested in documenting how we were spending our time in quarantine, I counted the number of podcast episodes I listened to in a little over a month’s time.

At some point, I gave up and let them spend hours listening to Harry Potter and Bunnicula while coloring or building with Legos. For myself, I wanted to see what all those minutes looked like.

A visual reminder of an essential practice, especially in the early days of quarantine.
